Earth day is one of the most important holidays celebrated on the planet. Of course, because it is a day where we celebrate our home & show our appreciation for all of the resources it gives us & our support for protecting the environment. Earth day was founded in 1969 by peace activist John McConnell. He proposed Earth day as a day to honor the Earth & celebrate peace. The original day Earth Day was supposed to be held was the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere, March 21, 1970. Then United States Senator Gaylord Nelson decided to coordinate a nationwide event on April 22, 1970. Activist Dennis Hayes, who was the National Coordinator & Nelson then renamed the event “Earth Day.” Nelson later on went to win the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work, & Hayes went on to coordinate international events in 141 nations. An unknown and amazing fact was that the very first Earth Day still remains the largest single day protest in human history after more than 20 million people gathered in the streets to show their love & support for the planet. The United Auto Workers was the biggest financial supporter & collaborator of this event, & they played a huge role in its success. The UAW is a labor union that was founded in the 1930s and represents workers in Canada, Puerto Rico, & the USA. Another significant event that happened on Earth Day in 2016 was the signing of the acclaimed climate protection treaty, the Paris Agreement, that was signed by 120 countries including the UK, USA, and China. Although the most notable Earth day was in 2020 where over 100 million people celebrated its 50th anniversary, & is now know as the most large-scale online mass congregation in the known history of the Earth. We must always cherish this holiday and every year promote green innovation to help us better protect our planet, conserve its diversity of species, & preserve the health and climate of our atmosphere for the strength & vigor of many generations, pioneers, scientists, & innovators to come! Let us help our friends & neighbors to become a part of this environmental & climate initiative so their children can grow up & thrive in a healthy welcoming environment.
